ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL RISK ASSESSMENT IN LENDING
ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPLEMENTATION PRINCIPLES
Türk Eximbank bases its operations on the Environmental and Social Implementation Principles, which were prepared in line with the “Recommendation on Common Approaches for Officially Supported Export Credits and Environmental and Social Due Diligence” (the “Common Approaches”). These Principles prioritize environmental and social impacts, human rights, and business ethics criteria in the transactions the Bank supports. Environmental and social impacts are assessed in all direct and indirect activities; adherence to internationally accepted standards and principles, such as the IFC Performance Standards, the World Bank Environmental, Health, and Safety Guidelines, the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework, and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, is ensured.
The Bank applies the Environmental and Social Risk Model to transactions that are not on the “Türk Eximbank List of Activities Not Financed” but meet the following criteria:
- All investment loans with the Bank’s share of USD 10 million or more and a maturity of 24 months or longer, as well as medium- and long-term insurance/guarantee and international loan applications.
- Investment and international loan applications with a maturity of 24 months or more, located in environmentally or socially sensitive areas, or with a high probability of significant human rights impacts, even if the Bank’s share is below USD 10 million.
- Loan applications that meet the criteria agreed with the relevant institution for the disbursement of tied resources provided by, or under the guarantee of, supranational and international organizations such as MIGA, the World Bank, the Council of Europe Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, as well as loan applications required by other funding sources subject to different criteria.
These processes are conducted in accordance with the criteria agreed upon with the relevant international organizations for the purpose of classifying and managing potential risks.
